Nikkei Asian Review reported Apple began actively exploring the possibility of an American made iPhone. Apple had asked partners to put together a 'Made in the USA' plan. They said Apple approached two Chinese companies that share the role of assembling its iPhones to investigate the possibility of making iPhones in U.S. factories.

Update 2017:

Following a strong second fiscal quarter in 2017 in which Apple revenues hit nearly $53 billion, Apple began taking on a mission to bring more manufacturing jobs back to the US with the creation of a billion-dollar fund. Speaking to CNBC’s Jim Cramer, CEO Tim Cook said: "Apple presently has 80,000 people working in the US alone, of which about 25,000 are employed in the company’s research and development wings. He also said that Apple spent $50 billion in 2016 in the US, buying parts from suppliers who manufacture locally, including Corning and 3M."

Chipsets and Processors: Made by GlobalFoundries in the United States.

Radio Frequency Modules: Made by Avago technologies and TriQuint Semiconductor in the United States, also Qualcomm in the United States for LTE connectivity.

Screen and Glass: Made by Corning (Gorilla Glass) in the United States, also GT Advanced Technologies produced the sapphire crystals in the screens.

Semiconductors: Made by Texas Instruments, Fairchild and Maxim Integrated in the United States.

There are more than 130 million smartphones in use in the USA today and not one of them was assembled here...until now...UPDATE...The Moto X is one of the more unique smartphones on the market because folks could customize it and it is one of the few constructed in the United States. Soon, however, Motorola won't be assembling devices in the US of A anymore. The Wall Street Journal reported Motorola plans to shutdown its Mobility Factory in Fort Worth, Texas by the end of 2014. A Motorola spokesperson confirmed the news. Currently the factory employs over 700 Americans to produce the Moto X and operate an essential part of the Moto Maker assembly process. However, Motorola says the closure won't affect the availability of the device or its smartphone customization program. After the factory closure, Moto X production will be moved to China and Brazil, as well as other undisclosed locations.
